The Gathering: Wilde Grove Book 1 Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 1,189 ratings

The veil between the worlds is shredding. The old goddesses are calling.

Erin inherits a cottage in a remote village from a grandmother she's never met. Considering how much she longs to get away from the unexciting life stretching out in front of her, this might be a dream come true.

Except that it's a village full of witches and Druids practising an ancient religion passed down through the centuries, and the priestess leading it is the calm, uncanny death worker Morghan Wilde.

Life is different in Wilde Grove, with ownership of the cottage coming with a non-negotiable condition, and it's one Erin's not sure she can meet, or even if she should. She must choose to believe in the unbelievable - and then learn how to do magic too. Only then will she be able to claim her inheritance.

It's an inheritance that is so much more than a cottage in the woods.

Coming from a world that doesn't believe in magic, can she change her mind in time to claim her true identity and begin walking the path of her ancient ancestors?

The Gathering is the first book in Katherine Genet's new Wilde Grove mythic fiction series. If you like mythology, real-life witchcraft, and have ever wondered what's behind the veil to the Otherworld, you'll love the Wilde Grove books.

I will return again and again to the many deep and spiritual teachings in this novel.
It’s not just good writing. It’s a lesson in the spirit of our pagan roots.
And it touched me deeply.

A druids path. Much different than other books I have read regarding druids but very cool anyway. I liked it and plan to see book 2

The Gathering is the first book in Katherine Genet's Wilde Grove series, and it's a promising beginning.

Wealthy and privileged but dissatisfied young Erin suddenly finds herself thrust into a magical community in a tiny British village after she inherits a cottage from her biological grandmother (she's adopted).

This is the beginning, not just of her journey to find her true self, but of the weaving together of different lives, both past and present, among a small group of people whose threads of connection are bringing them together now for important purposes (which will be expanded on in the following books in the series).

The magic in the book is an interesting combination of modern Wiccan and Wiccan-adjacent concepts with prehistoric and animistic beliefs and practices. It's a realistic depiction of what a centuries-old hidden magical culture might look like, always adding in the new alongside the old, always evolving.

Erin is a bit naïve, so her part of the story involves some very elementary explorations and discoveries. But the other characters have depth and wisdom, providing a pleasant contrast and also a gauge by which we can watch Erin grow and deepen in her own understanding.

This is a lovely magical tale of finding one's community and one's true place in the world. I look forward to the following books in the series.

I can’t say enough good things about this series. I cried while reading it so many times, because it is just packed with deeper meaning and emotion. It is very clear that the author themselves is a shamanic healer / practitioner, and the magick elements of the book were very much based in real life practices. It was incredibly comforting to me as a solo practitioner to watch the characters live out their stories as I relate to them in so many ways. Reading this book made me feel like I had community on my spiritual path, even though they are fictional characters. I loved each and every one! If I had to choose, Winsome’s story line might be my favorite, especially in the final book. Phew!

I love everything about this book, especially the characters. They are rooted in my psyche as friends and mentors. The story is interesting, compelling, and even spell-binding, but I have also learned a tremendous amount. The wisdom in this book could be imparted in a more linear fashion, but when told through a story, it is easier to absorb and remember. I am grateful for this book. It has enriched my life and feels like home to me.

Got a bit confused at first but looking forward to the next book. I feel the main character is so unsure and wish there was more clarity.

For those of us who love the Earth, this book is a balm for our soul filled with ancient teachings and prayer for what we all are destined to face now that humans have lived in such an unbalanced way. Still there is hope because Earth will survive with or without us. This could be our new path if we choose it to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spiritual training via storytelling at its best
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 20, 2023
I came to this book because I was wanting to read something spiritually meaningful, but with the escapism of fiction rather than a spiritual training manual or self help book. Something a bit like the Celestine Prophecy but actually well written. And less epic and heavy going than Robin Hobb books. The Gathering did not disappoint.
It isn't the most sophisticated writing style, and I sometimes find the style of jumping inside the heads of every person in the scene a little bit overkill on exposition, but it is so easy to read, you just instantly get absorbed into the story and the world. There is so much spiritual wisdom and insight in this book that you could easily use it as a beginners self-study training manual, but it doesn't feel at all preachy or teachy - you just passively absorb the wisdom through the storytelling; for more advanced spiritual students or practitioners, there are great little prompts and nuggets of inspiration that can help you to integrate your everyday spirituality.
On a more practical note, the chapters are a perfect length - long enough for you to get absorbed in the story, but not so long that you open the book to read a chapter before bed and suddenly it is 2 hours after you should have gone to sleep because there isn't an appropriate point in the story to put the book down.
Can't wait to get the next book in the series :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting!

Who doesn't like a book about magic and druids? This novel is so enchanting in so many ways! The author creates a world that anyone would love to live in and should. This book has so many layers to delve into and some of them are relevant today. The author speaks of a new kind of religion that many think is dark and cultish. It just shows how some people can be so close minded to things they do not understand. I personally keep an open mind towards everything, because who am I to judge. I loved how descriptive the author was in creating Wilde Grove, you could tell that this novel is a labor of love. I wish there was a Wilde Grove I could escape too. I will definitely be reading the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerfully written

I enjoyed the Gathering immensely. I have never read another book quite like it.
A whole village is, in some way, part of a Druid grove led by interesting, mostly strong characters. We are treated to themes of initiation, past lives, the pagan wheel, and being true to oneself in a world brought down with consumerism. The descriptions of nature are quite beautiful.
There are two really tiny quibbles. I do love a good story- an exciting page-turner. However, at times, I felt the story took second place to teaching the reader all about Shamanism, Druidry and Paganism, truly fascinating as these subjects are.
Also, I wished that the angelic Stephan, although young, was just a tad more manly. That would have given the story more oomph.
But I am, perhaps, being over-fussy. I have already started the next book - The Belonging. Thank you Katherine Genet for your beautiful, timely story.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book I've been looking for.
Reviewed in Canada on February 3, 2024
I absolutely loved this book. I've read so much witch fiction and none of it hits right. This book barely counts as fiction as it is so close to my own experiences with the old religion. I love the attention to mood, detail, emotion and atmosphere. I especially loved that the real world that we are living in and dealing with right now was woven into the story, the pandemic, the left-ist ideology that seemed to annoy other readers. I love it because I feel the same way. Manoeuvring through the world we live in with magic and spirit is just the kind of stories we need to immerse ourselves in. The rituals described here are so close to what I've participated in, the community is that which I crave to have. It's so obvious that the author has first hand knowledge of this spirituality and writes about it so well. I look forward to rolling around in the next books of this series like a warm blanket on a cold morning.
