Product Description

In 1970, Louis Armstrong went to the Newport Jazz Festival as a special guest to perform his own set, but also to be honored by friends and admirers on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Louis Armstrong: Good Evening Ev'rybody is a document of that event, a collection of interviews, backstage rehearsal footage, and performances. It's footage that had remained unreleased until recently. The concert film is an amazing discovery,. This new DVD was mastered in high-definition, struck from the original 16mm film elements, with a restored soundtrack that is a true blessing to the audience, taking us as close to possible to hearing what the music would have sounded like had we actually been there. The first part of the concert is devoted to performances by Armstrong's band and his regular collaborators, folks like Ray Nance, Jimmy Owens, Bobby Hackett, and Wild Bill Davison. The tributes are loving and light-hearted, including a humorous take on "I'm Confessin'" with Dizzy Gillespie doing a spot-on impression of the bandleader, ending with the whole band chiming in for the big finish, each doing their own Louis. It's humor born of respect, and the admiration is mutual. Between each song, Armstrong explains to the camera who each of the players are, what makes them unique, and why he rates them amongst the best. He also talks about some of his own history and the philosophy behind his music. The man is self-effacing and humble. When he shares a little about how he writes his songs, he concludes the explanation with, "That's all. No big deal." You can tell that's exactly how he feels about himself, even if everyone around him knows he's a legend. "Good Evening Ev'rybody was produced from a digital, high definition restoration of the original 16mm film of the 1970 concert, which was produced and directed by legendary jazz impresario George Wein (founder and Producer of the Newport Jazz Festival) and filmmaker Sidney J. Stiber.

This 1970 Newport tribute to Pops is an all star love fest that was intended to be his 70th birthday celebration but was in fact a year early. The remastered release if the concert is pristine and crisp, and the performances from Dizzy to Mahalia are labors of love to old Satch. Seeing Louis so thin and obviously not well at this time, unable to play his horn per doctor's orders is the one sad reality that makes one truly appreciate the joy and effort he puts into his singing on stage . It must have taken all of his remaining strength to even attend the tribute, and sadly in a little more than a year's time, Louis would be gone. Thankfully, he lived long enough to enjoy this well deserved salute from so many admirers.

How can you not smile with Louis Armstrong (sans trumpet) and be moved by Mahalia Jackson in what was their final recorded performances. To fill in for Louis, half a dozen horn men, including Dizzy and Bobby Hackett, let it all hang out in honor of the Master, Mr. Armstrong. Taken from films of the Newport Jazz Festival in Louis' honor, the excellent audio, video and editing promote a feeling of the spontaneity experienced on site. And when Mahalia takes the stage at the Festival's conclusion, she seizes control of all the souls in the audience like she did in the 50's when she and Louis were still young.

A warm, feel good presentation. I love Pops but I also love Mahalia Jackson and it's such a treat to see them together. They both would die soon after this filming and it's great to see them both having a joyful good time.

This Program for 1970 concert was originally put together in 2008 (per the credits) but it's now released in 2019 and over 2 hours of great stuff!

Anyone with interest an Louis Armstrong will want to seek out the DVD release of Good Evening Ev’rybody- In Celebration of Louis Armstrong(ambassador Entertainment) which restores a 1970 concert produced by George Wein in Newport (shortly before “Pops” died). Wein staged the concert with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Eureka Brass Band and Mahalia Jackson and then had Armstrong record narration. This new release adds 30 minutes of great bonuses and restores the sound and video. HIGHLY entertaining!

Oh yes, there's an insert with some notes and "track list" too.
