I could feel the button on the inside, but no matter how hard I pressed, I couldn't make it chirp. I still wanted my daughter to have them, so I decided I wasn't going to make a fuss about returning them. Then, miraculously, while my daughter was playing with them, the silent birds started working! It took messing around with the button inside to finally get them working, like it needed a good wack to jumpstart it or something. However, when the batteries finally do die, there's no way to replace them without tearing the bird apart and re-sewing it back together. I suppose, until then, I'm pleased with my purchase and my daughter will get much enjoyment from them.

They are surprisingly durable and the “bird song” is so much nicer than a squeaker for the humans and so much more interesting to the dogs.
