I have previously dismissed Fiberskyn heads as being rather "boxy" (meaning, "hatbox") sounding and not the best sound for my bass drum. As I have acquired a 1920 Ludwig bass drum that came equipped with the original calfskin heads, I've had a chance to get a better idea of the performance of the two materials. Result: a Diplomat-weight Fiberskyn head responds quite like a real calfskin head. For modern music, a Medium or Ambassador-weight head such as this one might be a better choice when playing out, while using a Diplomat or FT-weight head for the reso from the standpoint of durability. But you could do worse--especially given the high cost of real skin heads... It's important to tune the Fiberskyns properly: they should be tuned to resonate with the shell--NOT "Just Past Wrinkle", which will give a very poor bass drum tone. This will probably require up to three turns JPW, but then you'll have a drum that'll require little or no muffling and sound great. Buy with confidence.
