Crack the codes. Find the treasure. Escape the house.

From the acclaimed author of Scritch Scratch and What Lives in the Woods comes a action-packed adventure novel about three friends who team up to find a hidden treasure in an abandoned 1950's funhouse.

Twelve-year-old Sarah Greene wants nothing more from her seventh-grade year than to beat the hardest escape room left in her town with her best friends, West, and Hannah. But when a foreclosure notice shows up on Sarah's front door, everything changes. Since her father became ill two years ago, things have been bad, but not lose your house bad...until now.

Sarah feels helpless until the day Hannah mentions a treasure rumored to be hidden in the walls of an abandoned funhouse. According to legend, Hans, Stefan, and Karl Stein were orphaned at eight years old and lived with different families until they were able to reunite as adults. Their dream was to build the most epic funhouse in existence. They wanted their experience to be more than mirror mazes and optical illusions, so they not only created elaborate riddles and secret passages, but they also claimed to have hidden a treasure inside the funhouse.

Once in, Sarah, West, and Hannah realize the house is unlike any escape room they've attempted. There are challenges, yes, but they feel personal. Like the triplets knew who would get in. It seems impossible, but so does everything about the house. As soon as they're in she immediately worries that attempting the funhouse is a bad idea but Sarah has no choice but to continue, since her future is at stake.

The Mystery of Locked Rooms is a fast-paced, thrill-filled adventure novel with plenty of twists, turns, and unexpected surprises, perfect for fans of Mr. Lemoncello's Library.

I had to race through to finish so that my clamoring fifth graders could have their turn!

The Mystery of Locked Rooms is a cute middle grade read with a fantastical escape room house with 16 rooms.

Sarah's life is pretty hard right now. Her dad had been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Her mom is working two jobs just to try to keep them in their house, and her older brother is reconsidering his college choices to save money. Their home is being foreclosed on. So Sarah and her friends West and Hannah decide to pursue a secret treasure they have read about, The Triplets Treasure.

The triplets built a fun house in the 1950s that involved secret passages, cryptic puzzles, and far more fun than a regular fun house. Unfortunately, one of the triplets died before they could open. The brothers were too heartbroken to continue. But the treasure they had would belong to the person who solved the fun house.

Others have tried to break in and find the treasure, but no one has succeeded. But Sarah, West, and Hannah are the Deltas, three sides of a triangle, lovers of escape rooms, and they know they can solve it.

There is not a lot of story, other than that of the three kids, but it works for this book. Kids will love seeing the kids solving the puzzles and facing their fears.

Thanks to Netgalley for the advance copy of this book.

Great book for middle readers and up (8+). Poignant friendships and suspenseful adventure. Add this to your shelf!

Lindsay Currie’s “The Mystery of Locked Rooms” is her latest middle grade novel. It follows three friends, Hannah, Sarah, and West, known as The Deltas, as they navigate their way through the mother of all escape rooms, a very large unfinished structure built by triplet siblings in the 1950s that is rumored to have hidden treasure available to whomever is smart and brave enough to endure the challenges of what they saw as their funhouse.

Sarah, Hannah, and West are three best friends who love escape rooms. They’re also extremely good at solving them. They stumble upon an unfinished funhouse that they simply must try, even though there are “No Trespassing” signs all around and 2 other people who attempted to get inside were arrested trying to do so. But that doesn’t deter The Deltas. They are determined to get through this funhouse and find the hidden treasure that Sarah desperately needs to save her family from foreclosure and a possible move away from her friends.
If you like escape rooms, then this novel is for you. The Deltas love, support, and encourage each other, which is what true friendships are. They work together as they attempt to solve each new challenge that they incur as they work through each room, determined to save their friend’s future. This book has a lot of positivity that all young teenagers can learn from set in a backdrop of adventure and mystery as each one confronts and conquers fears they have while also learning about the power of friendship. The ending is satisfying as well.

However, you don’t have to have any knowledge of escape rooms to enjoy this fast-paced novel. The chapters flow together very well, and although geared toward middle grade readers, adults reading will have a hard time putting this one down. Each chapter seems to end on its own little cliffhanger, begging the reader to continue until the end. Parents reading with their kids can challenge them to guess what the next move the Deltas can do to improve their odds before embarking on reading the next chapter, sparking great conversation, which is what a good book should do.

So do yourself a favor and pick this one up, either to read for yourself or to read with your children. You won’t be disappointed, and you might even want to tackle that real escape room your kids have been bugging you to try once you get to the end of the book.

Thanks to NetGalley for an eARC of this book. I’ve read a few of her other books centered on ghosts. This one has no ghosts, but that’s okay because it is still a fantastic book. We have three best friends: West, Hannah, and Sarah. They are known as the Deltas, as they love math and numbers. Their favorite thing to do together is escape rooms. They are good at them and work perfectly together. Hannah and her family get some bad news. Her Dad has chronic fatigue syndrome and can no longer do much. Her mother is trying to support the family but can’t keep up with all the bills. They get a notice of foreclosure on their house. Sarah is too young as a seventh grader to work but wants to help her family. When her friends tell her about the Triplet Treasure, she convinces them to help her.

The Triplets were separated after their parents died when they were eight years old. They found each other again when they were in their twenties and built this huge funhouse with multiple escape rooms. They were going to open it to the public, but one of the triplets died before that happened, so it never was opened. The house has been abandoned for decades, but the Deltas still want to see if they can find the treasure. A couple of other people have tried, and not only were they unsuccessful, but they were also arrested for trespassing. Will the Deltas be able to conquer the abandoned funhouse? Will they complete it before their parents or the police find out? Will there be a treasure that will save Sara and her family?

I really enjoyed this book; just reading the descriptions of the challenges in the rooms was incredible. I definitely don't think I would do well at an escape room or even this funhouse, but it was a blast to read about it. It reminded me of other books I have read about challenges that people have to solve to get a prize. It sure keeps me on my toes with all of the challenges and wondering if they are going to succeed.
