Shmelf the Hanukkah Elf Hardcover – Picture Book, September 6, 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
In this delightfully inventive holiday tale, an elf named Shmelf takes a journey from the North Pole . . . and discovers all the joys of Hanukkah.
Shmelf is one of Santa's most important elves. He's part of the List Checking department, and he makes sure all the good boys and girls get their presents! But when Shmelf finds out that some children are missing from Santa’s list, he goes to investigate.
What Shmelf uncovers is Hanukkah, a wondrous and joyful holiday that Jewish families celebrate each year. As Shmelf observes a family lighting the menorah, playing dreidel, and hearing the Hanukkah story, he sees how special the traditions of the holiday truly are--and he wants to be a part of it! Luckily, Santa just might have a special role in mind for Shmelf . . .
The rich traditions of Hanukkah come to life in this whimsical and magical story that’s perfect for the holiday season.

Shmelf is a well-written, beautifully illustrated, fun, and creative answer to a question that many children (Jewish or not) have about Santa: Does he include ALL children?
Most religiously-accurate parents might answer, "No because only Christian children believe in Santa." In our world today, there are so many ways that we are divided: race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, weight, hair color, need I go on? It seems earlier and earlier, we start to emphasize these differences to children.
I write this as a Black Christian mom, so I realize that I don't speak on behalf of my Jewish brothers and sisters, but I DO know how it feels to be singled out and made to feel different and excluded from an early age. More importantly, I know what it feels like to be invited, included, and embraced, despite those differences.
My best friend from high school is Jewish, and when my single mother was having a hard time taking care of me, my best friend's family took me in. I learned a little about Judaism that year of living with her family, but mostly I learned about humanity and love. Over the years, I've been blessed to be invited along with my children to celebrate Hanukkah with several other friends as well. We always accept those invites and we always have the best time. The holidays are a time of gratitude and giving, a time for sharing with family and friends.
Even as a Christian mom, I sometimes struggle with the story of Santa. Does it take away from the main point and purpose of Christmas?
Maybe, but I think we can enjoy both.
Kids get excited about Santa, the elves, the presents, the mystery. It's a magical feeling. It's fun!! I think children need more of that, especially today.
Santa's new elf, Shmelf, not only introduces Jewish kids to a creative, inclusive idea of Santa, but he also introduces other children to Hanukkah and how it is celebrated by Jewish families around the world.
And, sorry again traditionalists, but I have friends, who are Jewish and married to Christians, *gasp*, I know, but it happens. Shmelf also represents a beautiful way to bridge the divide for their children.
Look, eventually, children grow out of certain ideas and certain "people" become mythical memories of fun holiday celebrations. No one moves into adulthood replacing their religion for one centered around Santa or his elves. No one.
I see Shmelf as more of an ambassador of peace, love, and goodwill. I think he'll do more to bring people together -- to a magical place of love, mutual respect, and understanding -- than most religious scholars or politicians ever will.
I hope people give Shmelf a chance to deliver a bit of compassion and a sense of inclusion this holiday season and for many more to come!!

The only thing I didn't connect with (which might be because I grew up in Israel) are the presents for each day. In Israel we don't have Christmas to "compete" with, so there was only the gelt and yummy, sweet, oily traditional Hannuka food. 😄 And it was still my favourite holiday!
Brought the book for a reading for my son's entire Year 1 grade (he's the only Jewish child in his grade). The kids were all absolutly fascinated! And so were the teachers!
