Awakening is the log kept by Arthur Davies, senior analyst for the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. Arthur, initially very skeptical, became convinced an alien really was being held by the government at a secret facility. The log is his story of what he did with that information, and how he was awakened to a part of himself he had never imagined; and how that experience showed him the threat that hangs over civilization and humanity itself.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Stephan Schwartz's superbly crafted tale illuminates perhaps the greatest illusion of our age: that consciousness is confined to an individual brain and body and the present. The Awakening challenges this limiting belief, and reveals ways of knowing that are already erupting among humans. This masterful story conveys an urgent, implicit message: our future on Earth likely depends on the degree to which we honor our intrinsic connections with one another."

Larry Dossey, MD

Author: One Mind

From Kirkus Reviews

While the spiritual and the political are often seen as mutually exclusive, Stephan Schwartz's "Awakening" is an inspiring fusion of both and an urgent warning to a species at the crossroads on this gift of life, our lonely endangered planet in a vast universe.

Ian Masters -- host of public radio's *Background Briefing*

Stephan A, Schwartz, one of the world's preeminent authorities on consciousness research, turns his formidable creative talents to fiction. I can't put this one down! What begins as an otherwise ordinary Freedom of Information Act petition in a Federal Courthouse in Washington D.C. leads to mind-blowing revelations about what our government knows and doesn't know about extraterrestrial intelligence and the alien invasion of our planet. Whether the setting is a wood-paneled Congressional hearing room, a swank Sushi bar on D.C.'s fashionable Wisconsin Ave, or a break-away race to cross the Gulf Stream to the Grand Bahamas Banks, Schwartz writes as if he's been there--and he has. He asks the big questions. Better still, he answers them.

Sidney D. Kirkpatrick, best-selling author of *Edgar Cayce, An American Prophet*, and co-editor of* Venture Inward* magazine.

Stephan is a dear friend I've known for many years, and I have been reading his annotated Schwartzreport selections from the flood of newsworthy scientific and political stuff that flies by every day, and reading his scientific papers and books, and noting his lecture tours and DVD productions, amazed by how one person can accomplish so much. Now suddenly he's a novelist too? And in my favorite genre, science fiction? Wonderful!

It was a considerable surprise to find the fictional story, "Awakening," so deeply engaging, but I should really have expected it because Stephan is a splendid story teller -- there's plenty of color and rich detail when he springs a vignette from yet another of his many lives and careers on the listener. This book is finely drawn from his personal experience as a young, fast moving admiral's aide in Washington, involved in major policy issues. I hope Stephan will write more novels. I can already imagine the one informed by his business dealings in Russia and his search for "the blue." And the one inspired by his psychic search in the Egyptian delta for the library of Alexander. Each such story will have a social intent, will push us toward insights we need. Already in "Awakening," Stephan is teaching us that we can depend on each other if we are willing to connect deeply. We can even expect help from unexpected quarters enabling us to accomplish "impossible" feats, just as Arthur Davies was able to extract Mike from the heavily protected government safe-house where he'd been held for years -- because Mike and Arthur could connect, deeply, with powerful effect. It's tempting to tell bits of the story, but you will be better served if you read it as Stephan tells it. It's a good book, which I am tempted to say is even better described as a valuable teaching vehicle. It is clearly designed to be not just a novel, but a powerful collection of essential understandings about humans entering the second quarter of the 21st century.

I have followed the author's blog schwartzreport.net (Trends that Will Affect Your Future) for nearly ten years, have read Stephan's other books, was especially intrigued by The Secret Vaults of Time. (As was my wife!) I have also taken the online course Opening to the Infinite. Through it all, I know from first hand experience that the author knows what he writes about. I have recently listened to Awakening on my Kindle, and am part way through my second pass. In his blog, seminars, and other written works, Stephan is painfully precise in documentation as a genuine scientist to the core, and the most grounded, practical, and academically-disciplined researcher and speaker one can imagine. While the casual reader may find this novel an exciting page-turner and contemporary thriller filled with tips for survival and evasion, I doubt there is a single detail not based on actual, documented science and insider experience. How do you protect your sources? How do you honor confidentiality oaths? How do you expose the dark government's methods to keep a lid actual alien encounters? How do you honor and preserve a participant's experience? How do you share how you took your own first steps into your own awakening in a way that can help others in their own journey? Nothing does all this better than the vehicle of a novel, with a lot of autobiographical detail mixed with the framework. As in any well-crafted movie script, there's not one detail present without a reason. I took note of everything repeated as a clue to its importance and as a technique to try for myself. There are other tools on the author's website: A Meditation for Modern Minds is a good starting place. Finally we have a gem of a gift to share with friends and family of some of the best teaching to be found on Awakening, yet via an entertaining, accessible story. Enjoy!

This is an unexpected but welcome change from nonfiction for this interesting writer. Who would have guessed he was a great storyteller! The book is clearly informed by the author's inside knowledge of Washington, not least the workings of our political class. As the characters move from government into a more truly moral adventure, we follow their increasing commitment to larger issues that transcend petty national/personal ambitions. That sounds like it might be a turn off, but, trust me, it's far from that. We come to really care about the people and the outcomes of their quest. At one level this is a traditional fantasy tale, but underlying it are all too modern threats to all our futures, underpinned by Schwartz's lifelong research into non-local matters. A good read and an important one.

While ostensibly a work of fiction, I am left wondering how much is actually true, from Stephan’s own extensive experience of nonlocal consciousness.
I hope many others read this, and soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars When you're looking for a good read this summer
Reviewed in Canada on June 4, 2018
When you're looking for a good read this summer, look no further. A unique blend of sci-fi and thriller, this a well researched and thoroughly entertaining reimagining of the 'alien from space' trope but with a totally unexpected and refreshing twist. Schwartz's background makes for a rich yarn that will keep you guessing and ultimately pay off with an uplifting message for humanity. This timely tale's positive outlook is as refreshing as E.T.'s was a generation ago. There's hope for us all if we follow our deeper intuitions and take action now. Awakening is the first step.
