The Study Guide for the National Counselor Exam and CPCE has been revised and updated. Over 400 pages in length, the study guide covers the eight CACREP core areas found on the NCE, CPCE, and many similar exams. The recent NBCC national survey of practicing counselors generated a re-alignment of the work domains or context areas (NBCC refers to the survey results as a new content outline). The overall result is that the NCE and CPCE will become more oriented to clinical mental health issues. Other recent revisions to the Study Guide include: relational cultural theory, changes in workforce trends, HIPPA updates, and initiatives in licensure portability. The 2021 revision includes information about the COVID-19 Pandemic's influences on mental health, couples and families, the counseling profession, and the workplace. There are updates about the use of telemental health distance counseling. Beginning in 2020, NBCC made changes to the number of NCE questions which come from each of the eight CACREP core areas. Prior to 2020, the number of items from each area was the same for several years. This is no longer true. Counselors should be aware of these changes to assist in their preparation to take the NCE. These changes are explained in this Study Guide revision. The Study Guide includes two practice exams, study tips, test taking strategies, the ACA Code of Ethics and additional exam prep resources. Because the information in the eight core areas is double-spaced, with considerable outlining of material and the BOLDING of important concepts, the Study Guide material is manageable and the book is user-friendly. It is also available for download.

My book seems reliable and answer keys are correct. Make sure you that are looking at the correct answer key, as there are 2. NCE/NCC recommends 90 days of studying prior to sitting for this exam by using MANY different resources. This book, Rosenthal, Pearson, and Tests.com seemed to be really good resources.

I have taken the NCE and CPCE and feel that Helwig's book prepared me the most (although I did benefit from studying from the Rosenthal book and parts of Erford's book). I love the spiral binding. I like how succinct his information is although sometimes I would go to Erford's book for clarification. Unlike Erford's book, Helwig's doesn't have a lot of extraneous information. I appreciated the bolding of key information although you should look at the non-bolded info too--It will help you! There are practice exams in the back which were helpful. While I think that having a variety of study tools can be helpful, this is the first and main tool I would use to prepare for the NCE and CPCE.
