Faced based account of the marines who were put in harms way without a clear mission or support from those non leader ship positions

This is an excellent book from beginning to end and the author did an excellent job of giving you the feel of being right there in the heat of the action. This book had special meaning to me though because 1st Battalion 8th Marines is the last unit I served with and it was twisted fate that I didn't go over there with them. I was only 21 back then and this book is so very well written and realistic that there is no way I could have read this back then, without breaking down just thinking about those guys I trained and partied with. There's not enough space here to say all I want about this book, so please read it and remember that while the nation has long moved on, some of us will never be afforded that luxury.

Wow, this book made me spitting mad! The author clearly lays out how good intentions can go horribly wrong without a clear strategic objective to guide military operations coupled with ineffective leadership. The loss of so many good courageous Marines could have been avoided. The author did a tremendous job recounting events from the perspective of senior politicians and military officers down to the lowest private. The book is magnificent and utterly frustrating all at the same time. This book should be required reading for diplomats, politicians, and senior military leaders. Absolutely recommended.

Really quite good as I was researching this event for my own work... this is basically unknown today and it not taught about in high schools and colleges. Also instructive and it is proof that the staging of "atrocities" for propaganda purposes and hiding weapons and launching weapons from witihin civilian areas in contravention of decency and human rights despite all the propaganda to the contrary by biased NGOs is clearly stated in this book. Also the human side in terms of the personalities of the people involved is expertly handled by the author. It can get dry at times, but if you are a military historian or interested in today's Middle East this is well worth reading.

If you like Military history then this book is for you. This is a forgotten battle which is a result of the Marine Barracks being destroyed by a suicide bomber. Another reason I purchased this book is the fact that my USMC Brother-in-Law, Shawn P. Gallagher, was there and is also documented in the book.

This is a great book that was written a few years ago, but will to help explain why we got ourselves involved in a civil war with zero interest for the United States. This action still has repercussions even until today. The Reagan administration sent these Marines off to be "peacekeepers" in a land that has never, ever known peace. Future and probably the current President should read this book before the haul off and decide to sent our armed forces to "stomp out forest fires" all over the world.

Excellent. Mr.Hammel once again brings you right to the front lines with superb detail and a disturbing look into how our elected officials lead from afar, making arbitrary decisions that have grave consequences for the men on the ground. A must read for military historians, The Root gives the men who fought and died the recognition they deserve. Some very hard lessons were learned in Beirut, and Mr. Hammel captures the horror of combat and the spirit of the American Fighting Man like no other.

5 STARS....ABSOLUTELY!
