This was a great book to read. The book gets 5*. However the publisher gets a -5* review due to the slapdash (completely crappy) formatting. Absolutely no effore was spent to clean this book up for the Kindle. Pagination and formatting were ignored to the point of distraction. Many words were hyphenated (for print formatting) and left to sit in the middle of a line, actually making names and words difficult to read. This kind of neglegence by a publisher is inexcusable. ... What should a good eBook have? 1) Clean word formatting -- dump the hyphenation; 2) An active table of contents -- not fancy, just useable; and 3) A decent "active" index.
-----
The saddest thing is that a Linux system could have fixed 98% of the hyphenation errors in under 2 seconds:
$ sed 's/-//g
s/ -//g
s/- //g
s/ - //g' < input.txt > output.txt

Note: this would have eliminated all "-" items in the book. On the other hand, a High School Student at minimum wage could have done it by hand in less than a week!
-----
PS. At least the font selected was a good (and easy to read) one.

----

A belated upgrade. The eBook version has been proofread & virtually all of the errors in the text that I have mentioned above have been corrected. (Like a large Persian Carpet, no book ends up perfectly edited. There's always that one last glitch hiding deep in the text (or fabric). That said, I have upgraded the book from a 1* to a 5*)

A terrific but terrible battle of the Solomon islands campaign both on the ground air and sea. Great detail of all battles are described in detail. I had readable the Marines but not as much about the naval battles. They are brutal and also the Cactus air force. A very good read

I enjoyed the book. I bought it because I was acquainted with the late Sgt. Goble, who was wounded in the battle. His story is told in the book. Goble lived to be 102 and I knew him about 35 years ago when he was an energetic 70 or so. The book gets a bit tedious at times as the author identifies all the units involved. But that is history, and if you had a friend or relative who served there, those details are important and appreciated.

My Dad was on Guadalcanal so naturally I’m drawn to read everything I can on the subject. 1st person account of the battle that ended Japanese domination of the Pacific. Victory fever shows and American tenacity to stop it is reflected in this highly detailed account of ground, air and sea battles. One of many books I’ve added to my library on this subject.

This is a very detailed account of the battles for control of Guadalcanal from both the American and Japanese sides. I have been reading about this battle since I was in middle school in the 50s. This is the first time the Japanese had lost a protracted land battle since the turn of the century. If Midway was the turning point in the Naval war, Guadalcanal was the turning point in the land combat.

Frank may have written the seminal work on Guadalcanal, but I go with Hammel for color and ease of reading. I have read all of his Guadalcanal works, they are all excellent. This book covers the ground war for Guadalcanal, so if you think you have it bad, read it and place yourself in the place of these Marines. It was a bizarre, almost backhanded campaign for the island, poorly supported and a sideshow to the ETO. Excellent read, well written and fascinating.

With incredible detail attempts to describe the many separate events that add up the the battle for Guadalcanal . The Naval exchanges in the surrounding waters are described in all their confused detail. The staggering death toll at sea was greater than on land. I am sure that more could have been written concerning the medical challenge . It would be difficult to read no doubt. A great book for those interested to go the extra mile in history.

The detail is amazing. It really brings out the complexity of the battle that no other book has. Highly recommend this book if you are searching for more detail into this battle.
