Marquetry is a technique where different natural colors of wood veneers are carefully cut to fit precisely together, creating a spectacular design in a single sheet or picture. In the mid 16th century, Italian craftsmen began using marquetry as a furniture decorating art. Using a technique called the double-bevel cut, the novice to advanced woodworker is led through a fully illustrated step-by-step process from the design to the finish. Hundreds of color photographs demonstrate in detail how to saw your own veneers out of solid wood planks, the tools and materials required, using the scroll saw and the fret saw, choosing woods for color and grain, design tips, shading with hot sand, and finishing. Four patterns ranging from simple to challenging projects are included as is an extended gallery of finished works to inspire the marquetarian in you.

This is a great book if you have some experience in fine woodworking. It's simple and easy to use. I'm guessing that someone with less experience might be a little intimidated, and someone else that has a bit of marquetry experience might be a bit bored. The book includes good tool and equipment requirements and set-up. The plans in the back are pretty handy and you can photocopy them, make them larger or smaller, and it's pretty easy to figure out ways to modify them.
I didn't love this and slap a 5 star rating down only because it seems to have a finish line instead of any further guidance to increase skills or advance if you have marquetry experience and want to learn more. I would have also enjoyed the gallery at the end of the book if it was strictly marquetry projects (with detail photos of the author's work). Although I will say that it was neat to see one of the projects outlines in the book in a larger setting of fine furniture.

First, this is a book for beginners. It provides the step-by-step instruction to get beginners started on the right path and keep them interested. It gives the basic tools needed and then explains as well as shows their use. The Author does a great job of explaining double-bevel cutting, sand shading, and the use of scroll and fret saws. I joined a marquetry club six months ago and this book fills in what would probably take at least two years of meetings and shows to learn. I may eventually outgrow it, but it has already earned a place on my reference shelf. .

Having just received the book and after having read the "how-to" and skimmed through the example projects, I can agree with the 2-star review from the perspective of someone who already has some experience with marquetry. However, for someone new to the topic, this book is a very good introduction to the craft. It has excellent examples and clear descriptions with good step-by-step process details supported with many color photos. Troubleshooting are included, as well. It has pretty much everything needed to help the initiate be successful in short order. Not for the experienced marquetarian.

It covers:
Species selection with some sample photos of species used in the projects covered within the book
Scroll saw setup and usage
Fret saw table and usage
Detailed bandsaw setup for resawing
Resawing cutting procedures
Tools, Materials, and Supplies
Good coverage of double-bevel cutting "how-to" with the scroll and fret saw
Hot sand shading
Sample projects with detailed step-by-step procedures start to finish.

Again, if you're already experienced in this craft, this book might not be of much value you.
