In this exuberant picture book about transformation through art, Mira lives in a gray urban community until a muralist arrives and, along with his paints and brushes, brings color, joy, and hope to the neighborhood.

What good can a splash of color do in a community of gray? As Mira and her neighbors discover, more than you might ever imagine!

Based on the true story of the Urban Art Trail in San Diego, California, Maybe Something Beautiful reveals how art can inspire transformation—and how even the smallest artists can accomplish something big. Pick up a paintbrush and join the celebration!

Behind the Scenes with Rafael López

An inside look at the artistic process behind Maybe Something Beautiful, the vibrant picture book based on the true story of the Urban Art Trail in San Diego, California. Below are some early sketches from the book, and some background information from the award-winning illustrator.

I wanted to capture the essence of the East Village where we started painting our fist mural in Down Town San Diego.

I took my camera and walked around photographing and capturing the actual buildings from the neighborhood. I wanted somehow to incorporate them into the book. As you can see on the right I had to correct the perspective to straighten them to fit what I had in mind.

Once the buildings were straightened I added my own textures I created with different techniques, using acrylic and watercolor.

I created a collection of new 'fictitious' buildings for the story but based on the actual buildings. I cut pieces of construction paper and then incorporated the textures into them.

I then proceeded to create a pencil sketch to see where thing will fit. This is an important stage where you can play with size, proportion and editing.

One last stage is to paint your characters in this case Mira which I did traditionally with acrylic on wood board.

The it's all about putting all the elements together digitally and fine tuning the final composition. I had a great time experimenting with a new technique. It was very important to keep having fun! Enjoy!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—In a town that is dismal and austere, Mira offers her neighbor her joy—art. After Mira hands out some of her paintings, a muralist takes notice of her work. Eventually Mira, the muralist, and the diverse community come together to make their town a beautiful work of art. López's illustrations dominate the landscape of the book and depict the characters' movements in a painterly style. Warm colors portray the community's efforts to brighten their neighborhood and contrast with the more muted tones used to depict the desolate cityscape. The illustrations are rendered with acrylic paints on wood, along with digital tools to layer photos and other objects to create Mira's neighborhood. The prose feels somewhat distant from the charming artwork and themes. The narrative was inspired by an actual event, as noted in the back matter, but the text does not fully transmit the heartwarming story of the powerful influence of art. VERDICT An additional purchase, especially where the artist's work is popular.—Briana Moore, School Library Journal

This is a fabulous book about the power of art and creativity. In full support of that theme, it offers beautiful illustrations by Rafael Lopez (who also stunningly illustrated "Drum Dream Girl" by Margarita Engle.) His multiculturally-flavored art is happy and textured and fun, I just love it. I can't understand how he has escaped getting a Caldecott award so far, but it is clearly in his future. (Google him to see some great videos about how he creates his art.)

I kidded myself that I bought this for my granddaughter, it was really for me. This book is a charming work of art on all levels. Even the tactile quality of the book jacket is luscious, a testament to the commitment to quality on all levels in this gem of a book. I should just buy a dozen or two for all the gifts I need to give this year...I want all my loved ones to read it, it offers a wonderful message for all ages!

This delightful book, filled with hope is based on a true story about murals and art transforming a gray city. The text is captivating, mixing quiet moments with bursts of energy. The illustrator is also the muralist this story was based on and and he delivers inspiration with each turn of the page. The compelling images move from somber grays and urban textures to lively scenes bursting with color and emotion. An empowering story about changing a community for children and adults.

One of my favorite books used during read alouds this school year! An easy to follow story with good themes to pull out for children. Also, with having a visually impaired student, she loved hearing about the illustrations on the page. The story was so captivating that I bought for the art teacher in our school as well.

I purchased copies of “Maybe Something Beautiful...” because it is the book chosen by Jumpstart for Reading for its annual Read for the Record campaign happening on October 25, 2018.
The book is based on a real event that took place in San Diego. And its message is about the importance of beauty in our lives—whether we are children or adults. I loved that message, and I believe it applies to everybody, regardless of age.
The book is short, easy to read, and beautifully illustrated. I feel it was worth every bit of money used to buy it.

I'm always looking for quality picture books for my preschooler that show diversity without diversity being what the book is about. We got this because it was the 2018 Read for the Record pick. At first my son didn't want anything to do with it, because he doesn't like new things. But they read it at school and I read it at home and after repeated exposure he adored it and asked me to read it multiple times each day. He started reciting lines and we talk about it every time he paints. I'd initially gotten it from the library (because of him sometimes being adverse to new things) but when we returned it he was so disappointed that I immediately purchased a copy. When he's older we'll dive more into the true story that inspired the book. Plus, the illustrations are gorgeous! A great addition to any home or school library that will age well with the reader(s) in your life.
